The Brazilian Navy is expected to expand its fleet with the possible order of four additional Tamandaré-class frigates, as announced by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The decision comes as the first vessel of the class prepares to enter service, in what is considered a strategic milestone for the country’s naval modernization.
The PROSUPER program, responsible for the initial acquisition of the frigates, has already delivered its first unit, built entirely in Brazil by the Águas Azuis Consortium. The project represents a significant advancement for the national industry, driven by international technology transfer and the training of specialized labor at the Itajaí shipyard.
With a displacement of around 3,500 tons, the frigates are capable of operating helicopters, reaching speeds of up to 27 knots and conducting long-range missions. Equipped with modern defense systems, advanced sensors and integrated combat technology, the vessels were designed to operate in complex naval warfare and maritime surveillance scenarios.
Recent tests carried out in Cabo Frio confirmed the efficiency of the onboard systems, including weaponry and integration with other naval and aerial assets. The participation of different platforms during the exercises reinforces the role of these frigates as a key element in the renewal of Brazil’s surface fleet.
